Summary
The short story, “Once Upon a Time” was written by Nadine Gordimer. It tells us about how apartheid affects both sides. After a scare in her home, a reluctant narrator tells herself a “bedtime story.” There is a mother, father, and a young son. In the very beginning, the family insured their home, put up a trespassers’ warning sign, and put a fence around the pool to keep their son safe. Meanwhile, riots begin to take place in the neighborhood. For that reason, the family installs an electronically controlled gate. Soon, burglaries begin to take place because people are starving. As a result, the family puts bars over their windows and installs an alarm system. Afterwards, people from outside of the suburb begin to stay on the streets of the suburb. Therefore, the family begins to look at additional security for their fenced yard. Next, the family installs razor wire on top of their fence. One day, their young son is pretending to be a prince crawling through a thicket of thorns. And so, he crawls into the razor wire and is killed.
Summary Reflection
Please answer all questions in complete, grammatically correct sentences.
1. Explain the process you went through to write this summary. Please be specific.
As a class we read the story, "Once Upon a Time," by Nadine Gordimer. I then, reread the information by myself and got a good idea of what I wanted in my summary. I wrote the summary of this story out on a piece of paper and then turned it in for revision. When I got my paper back I typed it up and made the corrections.
2. What qualifies this paper as a summary? What are the requirements for this genre and how did you meet them?
This paper qualifies as a summary because it summarized the story, "Once Upon a Time." It shortened and got the main idea of the passage. The requirements for this genre are for the paper to be short, explain the point, and for the paper to flow. I met these requirements by keeping my paper short and simple, it explained the main point of the passage, and it flowed into each topic using transitioning words.
3. What piece of advice would you give someone writing a summary for the first time? Why?
I would tell them to make sure they know the story. Read it a couple times. Make sure you know the main idea, any symbolism, and any underlying messages. If they know the story they can make a good summary of the passage. If there is any symbolism it can completely change the meaning of the story. If there are any underlying messages it can add to the summary with more information. A summary is like a short version of the story so it should seem short and easy flowing.
